The saintly soil of Kashmir has produced a plethora of powerful souls who engineered the landscape of Kashmir according to the sublime principles of Islam. Of such powerful souls, Syed Ali Geelani September 29, 1929 - September 1, 2021 stands aloft and invincible. Rehbar e Kashmir Syed Ali Geelani dedicated his life to free the hapless people of Kashmir from the fetters of ruthless and barbaric Indian military occupation while hitting the same trajectory as that of Mohsin e Kashmir Syed Ali Hamdani (Ra) who made his noble efforts for the emancipation of the people of Kashmir from the shackles of disbelief and polytheism.
Syed Ali Geelani was born in a small hamlet of Zurmunz Bandipora. Their family later migrated to Door Sopore in 1950. He got his primary education from Botengoo Primary School and Sopore High School. Later he got the degree of Adeeb Aalim from Oriental Collage Lahore and Adeeb Fazil and Munshi Fazil from Kashmir University. He was appointed as a teacher in 1949. and it was during this time that he was introduced to the works of Syed Abul A'ala Maududi which transformed him immensely. In 1953 he became a member of Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir. Later he resigned from his job to dedicate himself completely to the service of Islamic Movement. He was arrested on 28 August 1962 for the first time and released after thirteen months. He spent 14 years of his life in prisons and last 14 years of his life in house arrest. He also served as Member of Legislative Assembly for 15 years until 1989 when he resigned. He served Jamaat as its District President, Editor Azan, Head of Political Bureau, and Secretary General. On 7 August 2004 he launched Tehreek-i-Hurriyat after written understanding with Jamaat-i-Islami and remained its president until August 2018. He served as Chairman of Hurriyat Conference for long and was also member of The Muslim World League. He was a prolific writer and versatile speaker. He is the author of more than twenty books.
On August 14, 2020, he was conferred highest civilian award of Islamic Republic of Pakistan Nishan-e-Pakistan in furtherance of a July 2020, Senate resolution asking the government to confer the Nishan-e-Pakistan on him and name a proposed university in Islamabad after him.
He passed away on September 1, 2021, after braving Indian occupation and fatal diseases for long. He was denied a proper funeral and his body was desecrated like his great grandfather Hussain in Ali [ric aul ,]. He lived a life of Mujahid and attained immortality of martyr like a sincere and dedicated Mujahid. Islam as the complete code of life and accession of Kashmir to Pakistan remain two pivots around which his life and struggle revolved.
